Considered part of Europe, Iceland is actually closer to Greenland than it is to Europe. The island is still undergoing physical growing pains with occasional volcanic eruptions. You can see where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are growing apart at Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Adventuring abounds in Iceland, whether you go on a truly small group tour or drive yourself. Lava tube walks, glacier hikes/ascents, black beaches, and soaring geysirs can sate even the most daring traveler. It is thought that Iceland may have been first settled in the 9th and 10th centuries by Irish monks, even before the Norse – whose history is written in the saga Landnámabók. Since the Icelandic language has not changed appreciably, modern Icelanders can read the sagas, and most know the story of their country quite well. There are plenty of Viking clubs and museums plus reenactments throughout the year. For most of its existence, Iceland was a vassal state to Norway, Denmark, or a combination of Scandinavian states, achieving true independence after World War II.

Reykjavik is the northernmost capital in the world and is a charming city

It’s the home of the oldest parliament in the world, founded in 930 CE. Learn more about Iceland’s fascinating history by touring some of the excellent museums in Reykjavik, such as the Saga Museum, The Culture House, or the Settlement Museum. More unusually, Reykjavik hosts the Punk Museum, located in a disused underground toilet, as well as the Icelandic Phallological Museum.
