There’s something to see and do in every corner of Ireland

There are two separate countries on the island known as Ireland: the largest part is the independent Republic of Ireland, and a 6-county area in the northeast is Northern Ireland, and part of the UK – both are worth a visit. And fortunately that’s easy to accomplish from almost anywhere you pick as a starting point, as the island is only 150 miles wide and 300 miles long.

The west coast of the Irish Republic – known as the Wild Atlantic Way, is chock full of soaring cliffs and headlands, quaint towns, castle ruins, hidden beaches, and accessible hiking trails. Travel to the Cliffs of Moher in Liscannor, which rise 700 feet above the churning Atlantic Ocean below. Or drive the Ring of Kerry and see the island Skellig Michael – this 110-mile, circular route takes in the rugged coastal landscapes and rural seaside villages of southwest Ireland. Or visit the captivating Wicklow Mountains – just south of Dublin – and see where “Vikings” is filmed and shop the famous handweavers of Avoca.

In Northern Ireland, travel the Antrim Coast Road which skirts the Irish Sea, and visit spots like Carnlough, Cushendun Caves, the Glens of Antrim, and Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge (and see where Game of Thrones was filmed!)

Tour Dublin for world-class art, culture, food and shopping

In Dublin, visit the Book of Kells housed in the Long Room of the Library at Trinity College, then see Dublinia – an experiential museum focusing on Dublin’s Viking and Medieval history. Yes, the Vikings founded Dublin, then known as Dubhlinn (or Black Pool), in 841 A.D. The museum itself sits on the site of the original Viking settlement on the Liffey River. Dublin Castle, Phoenix Park, Temple Bar, the Guinness Storehouse, the National Museum of Ireland, and world-class shopping on Grafton Street are also must-sees on your trip to Dublin.

Finally, Ireland has some of the most charming, chatty and kindest people you’ll ever meet (especially the cabdrivers and bartenders). Put this delightful country on your bucket list – it lives up to its reputation.
