Jolyon’s at No. 10, 10 Cathedral Road, Pontcanna, CF11 BBB Cardiff/Caerdydd
Jolyon’s is a thoroughly charming boutique hotel with 21 rooms and suites in the Cathedral Road/Pontcanna area of Cardiff.
Ideally situated next to Bute Park and Sophia Gardens, Jolyon’s is within easy walking distance of the Cardiff Central train station, Cardiff Castle (Castell Caerdydd), Principality Stadium (for rugby, concerts, and other events), Swalec Stadium (which hosted the Ashes test matches in 2015), and Cardiff City Stadium (football/soccer), as well as the National Museum Cardiff, Cardiff University, Womanby Street (where great music venues abound) and the high street shopping district. A slightly longer walk, or ride on the water bus or street bus takes you to the barrage/Mermaid Quay area.
Every room and suite is uniquely designed and furnished, with eclectic pieces sought out by the owner. Each accommodation comes equipped with an electric kettle, hot chocolate, tea, coffee, Jolyon’s lush shortbread ducks, candy, water (still and sparkling), robes, hair dryer, and more. The toiletries, Elsyl, are a delight to the senses.
And Jolyon’s also has a snug bar/restaurant, Cwtch Mawr (big hug), which is truly a wonder and delight.
But what really sets Jolyon’s head and shoulders above other lodging is the staff. Lianne Clowes and the rest of the staff provide personalised, caring service and help in every possible way. Recommendations, personal introduction to your room or suite, detailed explanations of anything you need….they do it all. Some of the rooms have light-therapy bathtubs, while others have plunge tubs, and all have waterfall showers.
Meals at Jolyon’s are incredible. Breakfast starts with full continental with cold cuts, cheeses, yogurt, fruits, and includes hot breakfast items as well. The teas and coffee are absolutely fabulous. Cwtch Mawr also offers lunch, tea, and dinner, as well as a full bar and a small but good selection of beers, lagers and ciders on tap, including a few cask ales.
A vegetarian option is always available, and puddings (desserts) are out of this world. The fish of the day one night in February was absolutely incredible—-pan-fried, it was very light, perfectly crispy, and redolent of the ocean. The bruschetta first course was memorable as well as the Welsh pancakes for dessert.
Jolyon’s also offers wedding services, party spaces, and more. When my friend and I were there a couple weekends ago, a couple of hen parties were in residence.
Give Jolyon’s a try when you head to Cardiff—-you’ll be pleased you did, as a fabulous experience awaits you!!
