I stayed at Hotel Bagues 5*, a member of the Derby Hotels Group, while exploring Barcelona. Situated on Las Ramblas across from the Cathedral of Barcelona, this hotel provides a homebase for exploration of the city of Barcelona on foot or via rapid transit.
The staff greeted me warmly as I arrived late in the evening, giving me complete instructions on all the facilities of the hotel. They gave me a surprise upgrade, which I gratefully accepted.

The hotel pays homage – in several unique ways – to the building’s history as a jewelry atelier and shop. On the first floor, a small museum shows a sampling of the art produced and sold. And every one of the 31 rooms displays jewelry pieces in wall niches. The design touches throughout the hotel and building indicate an exquisite attention to detail – the staircase is a work of art.
The hotel also has a rooftop swimming pool and lounging space, offering a perfect spot to gaze across the city, marveling in the magic that is Barcelona. Hotel Bagues also offers massage, a gym, a sauna, a cocktail bar, breakfast, and a casual restaurant.
Hotel Bagues serves breakfast in an intimate, light-filled space on the ground floor near reception, with a complete buffet comprised of fresh fruits, vegetables, yogurts, porridges, breads, cured meats, cheeses, sandwiches, and your choice of any hot items from the menu, as well as some of the best cafeè amb llet (coffee with milk) I had in Spain. The hotel also uses this area for the casual bistro restaurant offering lunch, 12 – 3 pm daily, as well as snacks and drinks in the evening.

My corner room on the 4th floor had two tiny balconies with views of the streets below – great for people-watching! The Hotel Bagues staff considers every detail of your stay– envision the fresh red rose in the bath and shower room, slippers and linen floor mats at bedside, a delightful handmade chocolate on the pillow in the afternoon, and complimentary sleep spray for your pillow in addition to the typical array of toiletries, among a plethora of amenities.
